Infusing Spirits
Infusing alcohol is an easy way to add your favourite flavours to any spirit. Though it might sound complicated, it's actually as simple as letting your chosen flavour sit in the alcohol for a few hours or days, making it an easy way to put your personal spin on any cocktail. We used apple and bourbon for this recipe, but infusing is also incredibly flexible, meaning you can infuse spirits using any fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, or spices you want. Different infusions will need to sit for different periods of time for the liquor to reach the desired flavour. More subtle flavours like apple or pear may have to sit for several days while stronger flavours like chilis may only need to sit for an hour. Make sure to taste your infusion every so often until you're happy with the flavour.
Some infusion examples include:
- Pear gin
- Chai vodka
- Strawberry Campari
- Jalapeno tequila
Have fun and play with different options and combinations; the world is your oyster!
Apple Infused Bourbon
- 8 oz bourbon
- 1 apple, diced
- Knife
- Jar
- Add the apple and bourbon to a jar and store in a cool, dry place for 48-72 hours, shaking occasionally.
- Strain out the solids using a damp coffee filter or paper towels. The apple bourbon can be stored just like any other liquor.
